This report looks at the different factors that contribute to unfair differences in healthcare for people with learning disabilities who come from ethnic minority backgrounds. These individuals often face extra challenges when trying to get the care they need.
One reason for this is that there are very few national laws that focus on how ethnicity affects the lives and health of people with learning disabilities. The report also highlights that there is not enough research being done to fully understand and address these issues.
It is reported that person’s ethnicity is not always properly considered, which can make it harder for them to get the right support. Within health and care settings, reasonable adjustments are not always adhered to, which widens disparities. Through a combination of such factors, people from ethnic minorities with a learning disability experience worse care and, ultimately, die at a younger age.
