Healthwatch Richmond was asked to gather information about provision for young people with special educational needs and disabilities by Richmond Council. This was done in collaboration with the Integrated Care Board and Achieving for Children.
Healthwatch Richmond collected experiences from over 100 parent carers whose children have SEND, and also from 20+ professionals who work and support children with SEND in the borough. This was done to understand and inform improvements to services in Richmond.
The study focused on 6 key areas:
- SEND identification and assessment
- Parent carer involvement in decision making about their child
- Perception of help and support received
- Preparedness for changes in education and life
- Involvement wider community activities
- Quality of support information
