Healthwatch England’s Recognising ADHD: How to Improve Support for People Who Need It report explores the experiences of more than 5,600 people affected by ADHD, including those who have received a diagnosis and those who are still waiting for support. The findings show that an ADHD diagnosis can have a positive impact on many aspects of life, helping people better understand themselves, improve their wellbeing and develop strategies to manage their symptoms. However, many people face long waits for assessment and diagnosis, with some choosing not to seek support at all because of the delays.
The report highlights the need for quicker access to ADHD services, better information and support while people are waiting, and improved understanding of ADHD across health and care services. Healthwatch England calls for more community-based support, better data on waiting times and demand, and greater awareness among professionals to ensure people can access the help they need at the right time.
